Very few stories in the word of God are more disgusting than the story of the births of Moab and Ben-Ammi. The evil influence of Sodom and Gomorrah is writ large in this story, as Lot’s two surviving daughters conceive children with their own father, and give them names that make it sound like they saw nothing wrong with the practice. Normalization of sin is one of the greatest dangers of a worldly church; “All a man’s ways are right in his own eyes” says scripture, and Lot’s daughters justify their actions using very worldly reasoning.
Now, other stories are nearly as disgusting: Abraham having his half-sister Sarah as his wife, or Laban’s deceiving of Jacob with Leah instead of Rachel or even David’s sin with Bathsheba and the resulting murder of Uriah; but the great lesson is that sin should be exceeding sinful; even the most seemingly harmless so-called ‘white’ lie is still a lie, even if worldly christians have normalized it in their minds.
Now, where sin abounded, Grace did much more abound, thank God, but we need to see the sin before we can see the Savior.
